The State DVD

i know most of you aren’t 25-year-olds like my ancient, wrinkly ass, so this post might be lost on you. however, back in 1993 when i was just about 10, MTV started airing this sketch comdey show called The State. look, i don’t use the word “hero” very often, but the people that made The State are the greatest heroes in American history. The State didn’t last too long, but it was one of the best sketch comedy shows to ever air, up there with greats like Kids in the Hall. after its demise, the people from The State went on to make shows and films like Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, Reno 911, Role Models, Michael and Michael Have Issues, and more.

the reason i’m talking about this is because after years and years of struggles with MTV and assorted licensing issues and red tape, MTV finally did something right and released The State on DVD. the official release date is July 14th (I think), but if you were smart enough to preorder it through the official website, then it’s being shipped to you today (along with a free tshirt, hey!). in honor of it being shipped, here’s a short, stupid clip from the show that anyone who remembers the series should remember and love.

if you’re one of the sad fucks that has never been exposed to The State (other than the video i just posted, of course), then do your self a favor and buy this immediately. if you are one of the lucky, old motherfuckers who remembers The State, i’m sure you have already done so, so i won’t nag you, you smart bastard.

Hummus

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, and an even longer time since I added anything to the Happy Page. So let me kill two birds with one stone — Let’s talk about hummus.

Look, I know it’s not a surprise that I would like hummus, but let’s be serious for a moment here: Hummus is fucking delicious. It takes about 5 minutes to make, and to fuck up the recipe you’d pretty much have to be a god damn moron. I don’t know what kind of an asshole would try to dispute any of this, but if you are that asshole, don’t bother contacting me; I’m hummusing it up. Hummus makes me happy.

Mystery Science Theater 3000

I’m not too sure when or how I stumbled upon Mystery Science Theater, I just remember being pretty young but knowing right away that MST3K wasn’t just funny as hell, but that it was smart funny. And don’t get me wrong, there’s a time and a place for stupid-funny too; I enjoy watching a man get his head stuck in a cupboard as much as the next guy. But MST3K is a certain addictive humor. And really, what’s better than talking shit about someone else’s great failure of a life’s work? If you’ve never seen MST3K, go buy a few DVD’s, crack open a beer, and watch some dude and his two robot friends make smartass remarks about horrible b-films. Wait, that description sounds terrible.

Look, there’s no way to describe a man and robots in a way that doesn’t make me or the show look completely fucking retarded. You’re just going to have to trust me on this one.

By the way, Mike was a better host than than that too-awkward to be on camera shitbag Joel. I’m completely baffled that so many people disagree. Regardless, Mystery Science Theater 3000 (Mike or Joel era) makes me happy.

Hockey

As an American, I undserstand that I’m supposed to feel an innate disliking for soccer, trains, and hockey (Americans in New England, however, get a free pass for hockey). Something along the way went horribly wrong in my genetics, unfortunately, and I am an unapologetic hockey fan. My parents had season tickets to the Anaheim Ducks when I was growing up, so I caught quite a few games. And even though in general I find sports boring and, well, dumb, Hockey is one I’ve come to appreciate more and more as I get older. So much so, that when the Ducks took the Stanley Cup in the 2006-07 season, I drank enough alcohol to fall on my head from a 8 foot drop and give myself a concussion. Hockey, friends, makes me happy.
